Climate ceiling - general
How does a climate ceiling work?
A climate ceiling is a so-called delivery system with which a room can be cooled and / or heated. The basis is an architectural (metal) ceiling that is equipped with water-bearing climate elements. In these so-called radiation panels, cold or hot water is fed according to whether there is a need for cooling or heating in the room. The energy exchange takes place mainly on the basis of radiation, which is experienced as very pleasant. This is in contrast to so-called all-air or convective systems, such as for example fan coil units or split units, where the energy transfer takes place by means of air. With climate ceilings, the air supply is determined based on the need for fresh air and...

What is the technical lifespan of a climate ceiling / system?

For the technical lifespan of a metal climate ceiling, we distinguish the lifespan of the metal ceiling and the water-bearing climate system. In practice, the end of the technical lifespan (> 30 years) is almost never reached because a renovation or renovation is already taking place before that time, whereby the ceiling is also replaced. The lifespan of the climate system also depends on the materials used, the water quality and the system pressure. From our own experience, we know that with normal use, the climate system also lasts for at least 20 years. After all, we delivered the first projects with climate ceilings more than 20 years ago and are still functioning well.

What is the maximum investment (% active area) of the climate ceiling?

The investment of a climate ceiling depends, among other things, on the number and dimensions of built-in components in relation to the panel dimensions. Ceiling panels in which, for example, lighting or air vents are mounted, are not or only partially covered. Our experience is that on average a maximum of 75 to 80% of the total climate ceiling area can be activated. In the case of ceiling islands, that percentage is usually higher because fewer components are often used and sufficient power is still supplied with less m² of ceiling space.

What is the ideal room temperature? How do you experience the climate with a climate ceiling?
When we talk about the room temperature, we actually mean the temperature of the air in the room. This is the temperature that you read and set to "thermostats" in the room. For your temperature supply, or thermal comfort, the prevailing radiation temperature also influences. A good example of this is that an outside temperature of 10 ° C can be comfortable if you sit in the sun and you experience the radiant heat from it. For the same comfort without the sun, the air temperature should be at least around 20 ° C. Because capacity for climate ceilings is largely supplied in the form of radiation, a room temperature of 25 ° C is experienced just as comfortably in cooling operat...

Do you also have standard ceilings or is everything customized?

In principle we do not have standard ceilings. An Inteco ceiling is always tailor-made; every building and user is unique, so also every interior of a building. Our sales advisors can give you tailor-made advice.

On this page you can read more about the customized options of the Inteco climate ceilings .

Can panels with luminaires and gratings also be activated?

In principle, it is possible to activate panels with built-in components.

Technically, this depends on the climate system used, the width of the panel and the size of the built-in component.

From a technical point of view, it should be noted that activating a panel with a cutout involves more costs while delivering a lower capacity. Due to the less favorable € / W ratio, we recommend that you only activate panels with built-in components if this is necessary on the basis of capacity requirements.

In which colors are the climate ceilings available?

All ceiling panels are available in any standard RAL color. In general, the white tones such as RAL 9010 and RAL 9003 are the "standard" colors. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the use of metal varnish has an adverse effect on heat transfer and will lead to a capacity reduction.

If you want to know more about our 'design' expertise, visit this page.

Is the standard edge bar also available in the color WHITE?
Yes, the side bar can also be supplied in white at no extra cost. We hereby note that with white edging, every bump in the structure against which the edging bar is mounted in the form of a black seam becomes visible, as well as the end connection between 2 parts of edging. To overcome this, white edged wood is often still sealed off (by third parties). We recommend the use of black edged timber, also called shadow lath, because it masks seams. If you want to know more about our 'design' expertise, visit this page.

Is a deviating perforation possible in addition to the standard perforation?

In addition to the standard perforation, many different perforations are possible. These can be determined in consultation, taking into account aesthetics, acoustics and various other aspects that play a role in the total experience of the climate ceiling, such as the use of concealed air vents that are blown in via the perforation of the ceiling. What should the water quality of a climate ceiling meet?

A question that is frequently asked to Inteco is: "What quality must the water with which the climate ceiling be filled meet?" The answer to that is actually very simple: "Regular drinking water is fine!". There are, however, other things that bills have to take into account. You can read about water quality in this article.

What is oxygen diffusion density?
Oxygen is one of the most important elements that we know; it is necessary for our survival. However, it is not always desirable at every location since it can also cause all kinds of corrosion (including rust). Rust and residue in a water-carrying system can contaminate the valves and pipes of the (climate) system and eventually even clog them. Oxygen diffusion density is the key word here. In this article we explain what it is and how you can assess whether a system has a good oxygen diffusion density so that you can enjoy the comfort of your climate ceiling for a long time. You can read the article about oxygen diffusion density here.

Climate ceiling - assembly and adjustment
Do you also mount climate ceilings higher than 5 meters?

With raised mobile scaffolding we mount ceilings up to a height of 5 meters. Fixed scaffolding must be erected above this. The latter is a labor-intensive process that must be taken into account in both the costs of the project and the planning. In addition, it must be taken into account that the release of the climate ceiling decreases as it is mounted at a higher height. At a height of 5 meters there is a correction factor of approx. 0.90 and for heating with no less than 0.65 compared to the standard power at ceiling height of 2.7 m.

How should a climate ceiling be adjusted?

When the mounting of the ceiling is ready, you can start 'filling' the ceiling. This must be done by professional installers and always in consultation with our engineers. Adjustment is based on the number of liters per grid or per space. These quantities are determined by us in the engineering phase.

How is a climate system vented?

The climate ceilings are not equipped with venting facilities as standard. The starting point for the design must be that the air from the climate ceilings is vented via the main pipes. The connection pipes of the installer must be mounted higher in this regard than our distribution pipes. Filling and venting the climate ceilings is best done per section.

Is a final clean necessary?

In principle, our engineers leave the ceiling clean after installation. As a result of work carried out by other construction partners, contamination almost always occurs in the form of dust and fingerprints. We therefore recommend that you have the ceiling cleaned professionally shortly before delivery.

How does the connection take place on the 6-way valve / change-over?
There is no standard solution or method for connecting the distribution pipes of the climate ceiling to the after-regulation / connection pipes of the W-installer. In many cases, 6-way valves are used for post-regulation / change-over of climate ceilings. If the 6-way valves match the hydraulic modules of the climate ceilings, it is recommended from the point of view of construction efficiency, reliability of the connections and costs to connect the manifolds directly to the 6-way valve. A prerequisite for this is that the connections on the 6-way valve are fitted with a coupling suitable for our pipe system and that these are mounted in the correct position and in the direction of our ...

Are distribution pipes insulated?

Due to small diameters of the distribution pipes and small temperature differences with the plenum, there are small heat losses and distribution pipes are almost never insulated. If thermal insulation is desired, we can take care of it for you. If vapor-tight insulation is required to prevent condensation, this must be carried out by a specialized company.

How many panels do you connect in series?

The number of panels that can be connected in series depends on the climate system, the panel dimensions, the distance between the pipes, the design temperature range and maximum pressure loss. We design the series / parallel circuits in such a way that the pressure loss on the connections of the distribution pipes remains within the set maximum. If no requirements are set for this, we use a maximum of 40 kPa. The hydraulic calculations required for this are performed per hydraulic module in the engineering phase. In practice, it will usually be possible to connect 2 to 4 panels in series.

How do you test the functioning of the climate ceiling?
All Inteco climate systems have been extensively tested in a climate chamber. We have our own climate chamber for this, but we also test at independent certified test institutes such as Peutz and HLK so that we can demonstrate the capacities of our climate systems with certified reports. The proper functioning of the climate ceiling can be demonstrated on location by means of thermographic research. For this we offer you the choice to have this carried out by ourselves with our own thermal imaging camera or by an independent agency that will also make a report of this. This research checks whether the water is distributed properly over the climate ceiling and whether cold or hot water fl...

How much cooling and heating capacity does the climate ceiling provide?

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question. The capacity of a ceiling depends on the type of climate ceiling, water trajectory, room temperature, ceiling height, activation or investment degree and a few more factors. For good advice for your project we advise you to record this with our sales department or view the comparison overview of the climate ceilings .

What is the weight of a steel ceiling with activation?

Every project implementation is different and every build-up of a climate ceiling can be different. Material selection, application of additional insulation, installation of built-in components are all factors that help determine the weight. In general it can be said that a climate ceiling weighs around 15-20 kilos per m².

What is the sound absorption (NRC or αw) of your ceilings?
The sound absorption of the ceiling can be expressed in both NRC (ASTM - C423) and αw (ISO 11654). The higher the value, the better the sound absorption. For both NRC and αw, the value can vary between 0.70 and 0.95, depending on the ceiling type, climate system and the acoustic package. Inteco has had the sound absorption of dozens of variants at Peutz examined. We advise you to contact our sales department so that we can provide you with a project-specific answer. We have written an interesting article about acoustic optimization. Click here to read this article.

What is the connection diameter of your distribution pipes?

The connection diameter of the distribution pipes depends on the pipe material used and the number of climate elements to be connected. For our MeandRo and OxzeRo climate systems we use standard RIXc (PE-Xc / AL / PE-Xc) pipes with an external diameter of 20 mm. For copper and (thin-walled) steel manifolds, we use tube diameters of both 15 and 22 mm. A PP pipe with an external diameter of 20 mm is used for our AdeRo climate system.

What is the pressure loss of the climate ceiling?

The pressure loss at the connection points is determined in the engineering phase and follows from the so-called hydraulic calculations. In order to be able to make these, the ceiling drawings including installation components must first be made and the cooling and heating capacities to be supplied must be known to us. Based on this data, it is examined which panels should be activated and how the series / parallel circuits can be realized. When determining the series / parallel connections, we take into account a pressure loss on the connecting pipes of a maximum of 40 kPa unless other project-specific requirements have been set.

Can air be extracted via the standard perforation?
The perforation in the ceiling panels serves primarily for sound absorption. From a technical point of view, it is possible to extract the return air via this perforation. This can be done by mounting a junction box on the panel or, in the case of plenum extraction, by omitting the acoustic package locally. Due to the small passage of the standard perforation (16%), dust in the extracted air will easily adhere to the plate material between the perforation holes. This local contamination of the ceiling detracts from the aesthetic quality of the climate ceiling and is therefore not recommended by us. For alternative options for extracting return air you can contact our sales department.

How much air is possible to extract per running meter of edge finishing?

The amount of air that can be extracted depends on the permitted air speed over the edge finish; assuming a maximum of 1 m / s in the openings, 30 m³ / h per linear meter of ventilation edge finishing can be extracted.

Do you also make bridges to hang the ceiling?
If pendants for suspending our supporting structure cannot be mounted directly on the architectural ceiling, so-called bridges are required. This can, among other things, be the result of installations such as channels, gutters and pipes or seams in concrete floors. Depending on the distance that must be bridged, a bridging profile with one or more suspension points is applied for this, to which the pendulum of the climate ceiling is subsequently attached. Because it is usually not clear in the price-forming phase whether and to what extent bridges are required, the costs for this cannot be determined and cannot be included in the quotation. To avoid unnecessary costs, it is important th...

With what kind of pipes do you connect the ceiling to the pipework in the building?

The pipes that are used to connect the climate ceiling are usually made of plastic (oxygen-diffusion-tight RIXc tube for MeandRo and OxzeRo and PP for AdeRo), copper or thin-walled steel. The choice of material must be tailored to the materials used elsewhere in the circuit. We are happy to provide you with advice on this.

Do you also make the cross connections between distribution pipes per grid with an after-regulation per room.
Inteco's standard scope of delivery includes connecting the active panels in series and connecting them in parallel to so-called distribution pipes. With bandraster ceilings, we offer the possibility of making hydraulic modules per single or double ceiling module. For other ceilings we can make hydraulic modules up to approx. 20 m². If the control areas are larger than the hydraulic modules made by Inteco, so-called cross connections are required to connect the connection points of the climate ceilings with each other and to connect them to the after-regulation. These cross connections are not part of the standard scope of delivery of Inteco but can be provided by us on request up to...

Can the ceiling be opened without the pipes having to be drained?

A climate ceiling consists of ceiling panels with climate elements. We produce these elements in such a way that they have sufficient 'excess length' to be able to hang the panels down or fold them down. This is possible without the system having to be disconnected and therefore having to drain water. If one really wants to completely remove or remove a panel, the system must be emptied. We recommend that this is always done by a trained person. We can arrange this for you on the basis of management hours.

Does a climate ceiling pollute?

The cleaning policy of the interior also certainly influences the climate ceiling. A dirty environment will also certainly deposit on the ceiling. It is therefore important to keep the interior of a building well clean, because then the climate ceiling will remain nicely clean. However, just like any other part of the interior, dirt and / or dust deposits will always occur in the long run. We therefore recommend that the ceiling be professionally cleaned every 5 years. For more information about the possibilities of professional cleaning of a ceiling, please contact our sales department.

Is a climate ceiling discolored?

Over the years, just like other parts of a building, the color of a ceiling will change slightly. Because the entire ceiling is evenly discolored, this is hardly noticeable. If a renovation is taking place, we recommend not to replace panels, as this will reveal a possible color difference. In that case we recommend replacing the panels in the entire room.
